Kamiphony | Cybèle Young

Koffler Arts welcomes Governor General’s Award-winning artist Cybèle Young to the Koffler Gallery for the international debut of her exhibition, *Kamiphony*, curated by Zoë Foster. Located at Artscape Youngplace in the vibrant Queen West neighbourhood, this immersive exhibition centres on a pantheon of kinetic paper machines.

What to Expect Over time, each sculptural object performs a small, repetitive action. Lighting and sound amplification accompany their movements, creating a shifting tableau of motion, dancing shadows, and sound. These kinetic sculptures draw from a long tradition that champions uselessness, engaging with historical debates from Aristotle to Jean Tinguely to examine our contemporary obsession with productivity and work.

The Inspiration For Young, this project is also deeply personal, born from her experience of menopause and exploring the space between what no longer works and something new that has yet to take form. Influenced by her great-uncle, composer Colin McPhee, the exhibition invites visitors into a public ritual where duration and presence take precedence over output.
