Step into the quiet, observant world of artist Eunice Luk at the Susan Hobbs Gallery, nestled in the vibrant arts pocket of West Queen West. In her latest exhibition, Luk turns her attention to the elusive freshwater mussel—a critically imperilled species native to Ontario waters—and the microscopic communities sharing its habitat.

A Microscopic Ecosystem on Display Inspired by Donna Haraway’s writings on multispecies encounters, Luk presents an intimate look at the involuntary collaborators found within her water samples: micro-organisms feeding, gathering, and drifting. What began as a studio windowsill observation bloomed into a deeper study of a self-contained micro-river. Algae thickens into dense clusters, organisms shift and emerge, and the rigid lines of glass jars soften into living landscapes.

Art, Ecology, and Care Luk’s work asks visitors to slow down and consider the invisible ecologies shaping our natural environment. By cultivating an intimate knowledge of these microscopic lives, the exhibition invites a broader reflection on our own responsibilities to the waterways and environments surrounding Toronto.
