Mico Sandwiches brings a distinct slice of Turin to Queen West, setting itself apart from the city's crowded Italian sandwich scene by focusing exclusively on focaccia al padellino. Founded by Domenico De Leo, who previously operated Da Grazia Ristorante in Alliston, this shop is the culmination of years spent perfecting a unique dough recipe. By blending premium Italian flours with spelt and rice flour and subjecting the dough to a rigorous 72-hour fermentation, they achieve a bread that is remarkably airy and soft on the inside while maintaining a satisfying, crispy exterior. The atmosphere is focused and unpretentious, designed to showcase the craft behind the bread, which is baked fresh in-house using specialized equipment to ensure that signature pan-baked texture.
For a first-timer, the namesake Mico sandwich is the definitive starting point, featuring marinated prosciutto, truffle cream, goat cheese, honey, mushrooms, and lettuce—a complex, balanced profile that highlights the quality of their ingredients. If you prefer something punchier, the Calabria, loaded with spicy soppressata, calabrian chili cream, and ricotta, is excellent. Expect to pay in the $19–$26 range for these generously sized sandwiches, which are substantial enough that you might consider splitting one or saving half for later. They are open daily, with extended hours until 9 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday, making it a reliable spot for a hearty lunch or a casual dinner. No reservations are needed, and while it is primarily a takeout-focused experience, the quality makes it worth the trip.
