Global Cinema at the Library
Escape the summer heat and expand your cinematic horizons at the Lillian H. Smith Library's ongoing *Movies From Around the World* series. Located right on College Street on the edge of Chinatown and the Annex, this grand historic branch plays host to an expertly curated film lineup every second Monday of the month.
For this August screening, settle in for a presentation of *City of God* (*Cidade de Deus*), the kinetic, visually stunning 2002 Brazilian crime drama directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. Known for its breathless editing, gripping narrative, and unforgettable soundtrack, it remains one of the defining works of 21st-century international cinema.
What to Expect
Each screening begins with a brief introduction providing historical and cultural context for the film. The event takes place in the basement program room. Admission is completely free, but seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving a little early is recommended.
Make an evening of it by grabbing a bite at one of the many fantastic noodle shops or cafes along Spadina before heading over to the library.
