Madison Chow: Overflow

Water is rarely recognized for its own agency, but artist Madison Chow’s compelling exhibition *Overflow* reframes how we look at aquatic ecosystems. Running at The Image Centre from September 9 to October 24, 2026, this series removes the traditional colonial gaze of the camera lens, inviting lakes and oceans to act as active collaborators in the image-making process.
Created using camera-less techniques along freshwater and saltwater shorelines during quiet morning hours, Chow arranges compositions incorporating local flora, beach debris, and her own body. As water rushes across light-sensitive paper under natural and artificial UV light, it carves its own features into the material. The result is a stunning collection of vibrant, abstract self-portraits that document an uncontrollable natural force while charting a deeply personal, reciprocal relationship with the water.
Located at Toronto Metropolitan University's downtown campus (33 Gould Street), The Image Centre is a premier destination for contemporary photography. Admission is free, making it an inspiring mid-week gallery stop just steps from Yonge-Dundas Square.
