Holocaust Education Week’s film programming rarely feels this urgent. *The Mad Dog of Europe* (France/Germany, 2026, 80 min), directed by Rubika Shah, excavates Herman J. Mankiewicz’s 1932 screenplay warning about the rise of Nazism — written a decade before *Citizen Kane* and never produced after Hollywood’s Jewish studio heads, under diplomatic and financial pressure, refused to greenlight it.
The screening
- When: Wednesday, November 5, 2026
- Where: Leah Posluns Theatre, 4588 Bathurst St, North York
- After: Zoom Q&A with Nick Davis, grandson of Herman Mankiewicz
- Joint UJA / Toronto Jewish Film Festival event
Why it matters
The film draws an explicit line from 1930s studio self-censorship to today’s polarization and cultural silencing. HEW programming at this level belongs on the city calendar — especially a Toronto premiere with a living family connection to the source material.
