Fairmont Royal York Annual Tree Lighting

Wednesday, November 18, 2026
4:45 p.m. – 5:05 p.m.
Fairmont Royal York
The Fairmont Royal York's Annual Tree Lighting takes place in the hotel's grand lobby (100 Front St. W.) on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, starting at 4:45 p.m.
The hotel bills it as Toronto's longest-running holiday tradition, and it is one of the gentlest ways to kick off the season downtown. The lobby, already one of the most ornate rooms in the city, gets transformed for the holidays, and the main event is a short ceremony where thousands of lights on the hotel's towering tree switch on at once while live music plays holiday songs. The whole thing is brief, which is part of the charm: you can catch it on the way home from work and still make dinner plans.
It is free and open to everyone, with no reservations required. Just show up. Families, office crowds from the Financial District, hotel guests and people passing through Union Station all end up mixed together on the lobby floor. Bring a camera, and bring kids if you have them; this is the kind of thing they remember.
In recent years the hotel has also offered reserved balcony seats overlooking the lobby for a better view. Check the Fairmont Royal York's own channels closer to the date to see whether that option is back for 2026 and what it costs.
Practical notes: the hotel is directly across Front Street from Union Station, so it is reachable from Line 1, GO Transit and the UP Express without going outside. Arrive a bit early, since the best spots near the tree fill up before the lighting starts. Afterwards, the hotel's bars and restaurants and the rest of the downtown core are steps away if you want to turn it into an evening.
