Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema programs a crisp night of Canadian experimental animation on October 25 under the title Begone Dull Care.
The films
Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart helped make the NFB a world centre for animation that treats sound, movement, and the film strip itself as materials. The program mixes camera-less and drawn-on-film work with cut-outs and music sync to names like Glenn Gould, Ravi Shankar, and Oscar Peterson. Titles include A Chairy Tale, Spheres, O Canada, Begone Dull Care, Mosaic, Neighbours, Dots, Blinkity Blank, Le merle, Mr. Frog Went A-Courting, and Pas de deux, with a recorded intro by filmmaker Matthew Rankin.
Practical
506 Bloor St W. General tickets $15; members $10 / $8 / free tiers per the Hot Docs box office. About an hour of shorts if you want NFB history without a homework vibe.
