What is Yasu? Located in a quiet row of converted brick storefronts at 81 Harbord Street in Harbord Village, Yasu is Canada’s pioneering standalone omakase sushi bar, founded in 2014 by Osaka-born chef-owner Yasuhisa Ouchi. The dining room is stark, minimalist, and serene, centered around an intimate 12-seat blond-wood sushi counter alongside a pair of auxiliary low-top tables. Without cocktail theatrics or distracting background noise, the room is calibrated entirely around watching the chefs slice, season, and form nigiri.

Yasu Menu & What to Order Dining is strictly a single, timed 18-to-20-course tasting menu that shifts with seasonal catches flown in from Tokyo's Toyosu market and global waters. Standout bites consistently include the trio of bluefin tuna—lean akami brushed with nikiri soy, rich chu-toro, and melt-in-your-mouth otoro belly—alongside warm braised anago and sweet Hokkaido scallop. The experience concludes with pillowy tamagoyaki and housemade black sesame ice cream, best accompanied by the guided sake pairing. Note that the purist fish-focused format cannot accommodate vegan, vegetarian, or halal dietary restrictions.

Know Before You Go Reservations are strictly required, opening 14 days in advance at midnight; be sure to reserve counter seats rather than a table for the direct sushi bar view. Plan for a strict two-hour seating and take the 510 Spadina streetcar or walk from St. George Station, as street parking along Harbord is sparse. Dinner runs nightly, with seatings beginning at 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5:00 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
