What is Shunoko? Occupying a minimalist, blonde-wood dining space at 3220 Yonge Street just north of Lawrence, Shunoko represents chef-owner Jun Kim's evolution following his popular tenures at Sushi Nomi in Roncesvalles and on St. Clair West. The room is unpretentious, airy, and focused, centering on an intimate sushi bar where guests can watch the team prep dry-aged, cured, and smoked catches. Chef Kim seasons his sushi rice with a signature three-to-five-year aged umeboshi vinegar blend, bringing a distinctive depth and balanced acidity to every nigiri.

Shunoko Menu & What to Order The main draw is the multi-course casual omakase, widely considered one of the city's best values, showcasing seasonal imports from Japan and Portugal alongside market tastings and house-made dessert. A la carte regulars swear by inventive maki like the "Can't Go Wrong" roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, and blow-torched scallop) and the "Butter on Fire" roll topped with torched salmon. The crisp coconut spicy tuna roll and generous spicy tuna hand roll are must-orders, ideally paired with Chef Kim's curated natural wine selections rather than standard sakes.

Know Before You Go Counter and table reservations should be secured in advance via Tock, as the compact room fills quickly for dinner services from Wednesday through Saturday. Drivers will find street parking on Yonge Street and neighbouring residential blocks, while transit riders are just a short two-minute stroll north from Lawrence subway station. Note that the restaurant is dinner-only and closed on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.
