Shinji

Shinji in Downtown

Shinji is a contemporary Japanese steakhouse located in the heart of Toronto's Financial District. Developed by Harlo Entertainment—the group behind notable local spots like MIMI Chinese and Sunnys Chinese—the restaurant moves away from the traditional, opulent steakhouse aesthetic in favor of refined minimalism and ingredient-led dining. The interior, designed by Odami, features a mellow, sophisticated atmosphere with indigo-hued banquettes that pay homage to Japanese denim, complemented by pale stone and woven textures. Under the guidance of veteran chef Jia Zou, the kitchen emphasizes restraint and precision, focusing on high-quality beef sourced directly from the Kobe and Himeji regions of Japan.

For a first visit, expect a menu that highlights seasonal ingredients and careful preparation. Signature offerings include wagyu sukiyaki, which serves as the restaurant's take on surf and turf, as well as large-scale shareable dishes like wagyu kamameshi and Osaka shrimp noodles. Diners can also sample decadent starters such as poached Alaskan king crab finished with caviar and brown butter. As a new addition to the city's dining scene, the restaurant prioritizes a guest-focused experience rooted in the Japanese philosophy of shokunin, or the dedicated artisan. Reservations are recommended given the high-profile nature of the hospitality group behind the project, and guests should prepare for a dining experience that values quiet, high-quality craftsmanship over flashy, traditional steakhouse tropes.
