High Park is still the west-end free day that swallows an afternoon: 1873 Bloor Street West, about 400 acres of black-oak savannah, Grenadier Pond, trails, and the High Park Animal Display (Canada’s oldest, 1893 — bison, highland cattle, peacocks). John Howard gifted the land on the condition it stay free; City pages still treat it as open park, no gate fee. Weekend and holiday road closures are in effect (toronto.ca, modified 9 June 2026): weekdays, visitor cars enter at Parkside Drive and High Park Boulevard and exit at Bloor and High Park Avenue. Cherry-blossom peak is usually late April into early May and lasts four to ten days — skip the car then. First-timers: subway to High Park or Keele and walk in; Grenadier Pond and the animal display are the quieter year-round bets. Stay on marked trails through the savannah. 311.
