About
Founded in 1976 by local activist Bill Powell, Festival of Friends started as a folk-rooted community gathering and has grown into one of the largest free music festivals in the country, pulling roughly 100,000 people into Gage Park across a single weekend. The lineup has broadened well past its folk origins into rock, blues, world music and more, but the free-admission, come-as-you-are ethos that Powell built it on has stayed intact through five decades.
What to Expect
Multiple stages running through Gage Park with continuous live music from morning into the evening, food vendors, craft and art booths, and a relaxed, blanket-and-lawn-chair crowd that skews toward families and longtime Hamilton music fans.
Pro Tips
On-site parking runs about $15/day and fills up — Hamilton Street Railway's Gage Park routes are a more reliable option on peak days. Bring your own chair or blanket since seating isn't provided.
Getting There
Take the QEW to Hamilton, about 50 minutes from downtown Toronto, or GO Transit to Hamilton GO Centre followed by an HSR bus or short cab ride to Gage Park (there's no direct rail stop at the park).
