Wonders of the Earth Gem and Mineral Show

For over half a century, the Wonders of the Earth Gem and Mineral Show has been drawing rockhounds, curious students, and families together to marvel at the planet's hidden geological treasures. The 54th edition takes over Highland Hall on the University of Toronto Scarborough campus for a full weekend dedicated to minerals, crystals, meteorites, and fossils.

Displays, Auctions, and Rare Finds

Co-organized by the non-profit Gem and Mineral Club of Scarborough and UTSC’s Environmental and Physical Sciences Students Association, the show features dozens of specialist vendors alongside museum and university display cases. Visitors can browse raw crystal specimens, cut gemstones, handcrafted jewellery, and rare meteorites. The event also hosts live and silent auctions throughout both days, giving collectors an opportunity to bid on unique geological specimens at accessible prices.

Hands-On Demos and Family Activities

Beyond vendor tables, the expo emphasizes hands-on education for all ages. Kids can take part in the popular Kids' Quarry excavation activity, try crystal-growing experiments, and participate in interactive geology workshops. Throughout the weekend, club members provide live lapidary (stone-cutting and polishing) demonstrations and jewellery-making sessions, while university professors deliver accessible short lectures on fossil histories and extraterrestrial minerals.

Visiting Highland Hall at UTSC

The show runs Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tickets are budget-friendly at $6 for adults ($5 in advance online), $1 for youth ages 5 to 17, and free for children under 5. Highland Hall is located at 1265 Military Trail in Scarborough. Paid visitor parking is available in Lot G on campus, and the venue is well-served by TTC buses connecting from Scarborough Centre and Kennedy Stations (routes 38 Highland Creek and 905 Eglinton East Express).
