Mastering the delicate art of hand-pinched Ukrainian dumplings gets a brewery twist this September in East York. Hosted by Grandma's Dumplings inside the taproom at Brunswick Bierworks, this hands-on culinary workshop walks participants through authentic Western Ukrainian recipes for varenyky, celebrating time-honoured heritage cooking in a relaxed, social setting.
Kneading, Filling, and Pinching Like a Pro
Guided step-by-step through the dough-making and pinching process, attendees will learn how to create two distinct, classic varieties of varenyky from scratch: a hearty potato-and-mushroom filling and a savoury blend of ground beef, garlic, onion, and dill. Every guest will craft roughly 20 dumplings of each style—amounting to roughly 40 dumplings in total. All kitchen tools, fresh ingredients, and prep materials are provided.
Craft Brews and Generous Tastings
No dumpling session is complete without tasting the fruits of your labour. Once the batch is simmered, participants will sit down to sample hot varenyky served with traditional sour cream and a rich vegan mushroom sauce. Your ticket also includes a pour of craft beer brewed on site at Brunswick Bierworks, whose expansive tap list pairs naturally with rich, buttery dumplings. Guests are encouraged to bring a container to take home the remaining dozen dumplings they make.
