Following a string of rapturously received, sold-out engagements across Toronto and Montreal, Soulpepper Theatre’s celebrated staged concert *The Secret Chord: A Leonard Cohen Experience* lands at the CAA Theatre. Created by Frank Cox-O’Connell, Marni Jackson, and Mike Ross, this production strips away the tired tropes of the standard cover band to deliver something far more vital: an immersive, deeply emotional journey through the inner world of one of Canada's most complex cultural icons.
Rather than simply running through a greatest-hits tracklist, the creators weave Cohen’s own written words, spiritual musings, and wry poetry with bold, unexpected musical arrangements. The result is a 90-minute, uninterrupted collision of sound and storytelling that captures the multifaceted man behind the fedora—the romantic, the ascetic, the self-deprecating humorist, and the seeker. A powerhouse ensemble of actor-musicians breathes fresh, unvarnished life into immortal cuts like "Suzanne," "Bird on the Wire," and the inevitable, spine-tingling resonance of "Hallelujah," proving that Cohen's wry wisdom and heavy grace remain as potent as ever.
The production finds a natural home at the historic CAA Theatre at 651 Yonge Street. Operated by Mirvish Productions, this intimate venue—originally opened as the Avenue Theatre in 1948 before morphing through various cinematic and theatrical iterations like the Panasonic Theatre—offers a closeness to the stage that amplifies the cabaret-like, confessional atmosphere of the performance. There is no sprawling arena distance here; you can practically feel the breath behind the lyrics.
