Sound in Sight: Reimagining the Polaris Short List Exhibition

Since 2006, the Polaris Music Prize has celebrated the artistic integrity of Canadian albums, but its creative footprint reaches far beyond audio recordings. With Sound in Sight: Reimagining the Polaris Short List, the organization showcases one of its most enduring visual traditions: commissioning Canadian illustrators, printmakers, and visual artists to create bespoke poster artwork for every nominated short list album.

Taking over the bright and cavernous City Hall Rotunda, this free public exhibition presents a retrospective journey through twenty years of Canadian music history alongside newly minted artworks designed for the 2026 Polaris Short List contenders. Each piece translates an album's atmosphere, lyrical themes, and sonic textures into bold screenprints and striking visual interpretations.

What to Expect

Visitors can stroll through dozens of large-format framed prints accompanied by didactic plaques detailing the album, musical artists, visual creators, and the cultural context behind each nomination. From indie rock and ambient electronics to hip-hop and folk, the collection illustrates how visual design helps preserve and extend the legacy of Canadian recorded music.

Because the exhibition is staged in the public rotunda of Toronto City Hall, admission is completely free and open during regular civic building hours. It serves as an accessible anchor for the broader Polaris Festival week leading into the grand prize gala.
