Immerse yourself in classic Hollywood noir as the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema on Bloor Street West screens Michael Curtiz's 1945 masterpiece, *Mildred Pierce*. This gripping psychological melodrama blends all-American ambition with dark, shadowy suspense, anchored by Joan Crawford's legendary, career-defining performance.
The Story
Crawford stars as Mildred Pierce, a determined single mother who pulls herself up by her bootstraps from an unflappable waitress to the well-heeled owner of a successful restaurant chain. Her singular mission: to free her children from the stigma of economic hardship. However, the relentless ingratitude of her materialistic eldest daughter, played with venomous perfection by Ann Blyth, sets off a tragic cycle of maternal sacrifice and cold-blooded betrayal. Recasting James M. Cain's novel as a twisty murder mystery, the film remains an unremittingly hard-boiled yet sumptuously emotional cinematic triumph.
