Ever wondered how Roman soldiers and civilians crafted their personal adornments? The Bata Shoe Museum is hosting a unique Lost Wax Ring Casting Workshop that lets you step back in time and try your hand at the ancient 'cire perdue' technique.
What to Expect
In collaboration with the Fort York Metal Co., this immersive session invites you to draw inspiration from the Roman Vindolanda Fort. You won't just be learning about history; you'll be creating a piece of it. Participants will carve and shape their own wax ring designs, incorporating motifs like military insignia or personal symbols.
The Process
Don't worry about the heavy lifting—while you carve the design on-site, the rings are taken away to be cast in silver metal by the experts at Fort York Metal Co. You’ll be notified when your finished piece is ready for pickup at the museum, usually within a couple of weeks. The workshop also includes museum access during the event time and light refreshments, making it a perfect evening out in the Annex.
Getting There
The Bata Shoe Museum is located at 327 Bloor St W, right near St. George station, making it incredibly easy to reach by subway. Whether you're a history buff, a jewelry enthusiast, or just looking for a creative way to spend a Sunday evening, this workshop offers a rare, tactile connection to the artistry of the ancient world.
