Doors Open Toronto is one of the city's best free events, full stop. For one weekend a year, 150+ buildings that are normally closed to the public — or charge admission — open their doors for free. The 2026 theme is "The World in a City," highlighting Toronto's global, multicultural character in preparation for the FIFA World Cup arriving this summer.

What Opens

Past years have included the inside of the CN Tower's base, historic bank vaults, water treatment plants, artist studios, places of worship from every major religion, private members' clubs, and architectural landmarks. The full list of participating sites is typically released closer to the event, but expect a mix of heritage buildings, modern architecture, cultural centres, and hidden gems.

How It Works

Most sites are walk-in, but popular buildings and walking tours require registration (free) as space is limited. Plan your route in advance — trying to hit more than 5-6 sites in a day is ambitious. The best strategy is to pick a neighbourhood and explore on foot.

Why It Matters

This is the one weekend where Toronto's diversity becomes physically navigable. You can walk from a Sikh gurdwara to a Brutalist government building to a Victorian mansion in a single afternoon. It's the city at its most open — literally.
