Yan Dining Room

Tucked behind the familiar neon of Hong Shing on Dundas, Yan Dining Room operates as a 26-seat micro-restaurant that feels worlds away from the usual Chinatown bustle. Chef Eva Chin, formerly of Momofuku Kōjin and Avling, teamed up with Colin Li to lean into the Cantonese concept of si fong choy—the private kitchen. It is a deliberate, intimate space where the cooking bridges the gap between heritage and local Ontario produce, focusing on a neo-Chinese narrative rather than standard takeout fare.
Expect a rotating monthly tasting menu that leans experimental, where Chin often walks you through the courses herself. Because they only open on select nights, you need to book well in advance; don't bother showing up without a reservation. The vibe is quiet and focused, a sharp pivot from the main dining room out front. It is a communal, immersive setup, so come prepared to pay attention to the plate. While the specific dishes shift with the seasons, the kitchen consistently prioritizes bold, nostalgic flavours over gimmicks.
