Woodlyns gives Eglinton West a dinner destination with a particularly Toronto point of view: Chinese cooking meets Jewish comfort food in a warm, wood-lined neighbourhood room. Jeff Goldstein, chef Josh Ling and DaiLo's Nick Liu are behind the restaurant at Bathurst and Eglinton, with a menu that makes room for both a casual sandwich supper and a tableful of shared plates.

What to order Start with matzo ball wonton soup: chicken wontons in a ginger-scented chicken consommé with bok choy. The Reuben spring roll folds pastrami, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut into a crisp starter, while pastrami fried rice brings egg, vegetables, gribenes and chilli schmaltz together in the wok. For a larger shared dish, there's whole steamed branzino with ginger, scallion and a schmaltz sauce. The pastrami sandwich comes on toasted milk bread; a mezze plate with mala hummus and scallion pancake offers another route into the menu. Browse the official dinner menu before booking, and leave room for baked tapioca pudding or sticky rice ice cream.

The room and the visit Amber wall lights, timber panelling and upholstered chairs make this an appealing spot to settle in with friends or book for a date. Dinner service runs Wednesday through Sunday, with reservations through the restaurant's website. The official site lists 4:30–10:30 p.m.; its booking page has different closing times, so check the sitting you reserve.
