What a Bagel

What is What a Bagel? Positioned along Dufferin Street in York University Heights, this reliable bakery and deli anchors the morning routine for North York locals seeking proper boiled-and-baked goods. Rooted in classic Jewish bakery traditions, the operation runs on energetic counter service up front, framed by packed glass cases of bread and pastries, with a casual cluster of tables in the back for sit-down bites.

What a Bagel Menu & What to Order The counter turns out chewy, golden-crusted bagels that excel when piled high with silky smoked salmon and a thick smear of cream cheese. For a substantial midday meal, order the crisp chicken schnitzel on an egg bagel or the hearty steak 'n' eggs, backed by deli-counter staples like rich tuna and egg salads. Don't leave without surveying the bakery cases for chocolate buffalo pastries, dense rugelach, and fresh challah, paired with a hot Illy coffee or a Choco-Banana smoothie.

Know Before You Go It is strictly walk-in counter service here, so expect a lively line on Saturday and Sunday mornings that moves rapidly thanks to an efficient kitchen crew. Strip-plaza parking out front makes car pickups painless, and the doors remain open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
