Steeles Bakery

What is Steeles Bakery? Serving North York from its Bathurst Street outpost since 1967, Steeles Bakery is an enduring pillar of Toronto's Eastern European baking tradition. The storefront is unapologetically old-school, centered entirely around glass display cases loaded with fresh loaves and heritage pastries. There is no sit-down dining room or cafe seating here—just a brisk, time-tested takeout counter where regulars grab warm bread and sweets to go.

Steeles Bakery Menu & What to Order Breads form the backbone of the production, made natural and preservative-free, ranging from dense pumpernickel black bread and caraway-studded rye to glossy, braided challahs and chewy Eastern European-style bagels. The pastry shelves reward classicists: don't leave without a sugar-dusted blueberry bun, an almond danish, or a slice of traditional apple flan. For milestones, retro layer cakes like chocolate fudge and Black Forest share counter space with poppy seed rings and walnut tarts.

Know Before You Go Everything runs on a walk-in counter basis, though advance orders are smart for custom cakes and major holiday bread pickups. Free surface parking is available in the surrounding strip plaza, and TTC buses run regularly along Bathurst Street. Operating daily from 7:00 a.m. straight through to 10:00 p.m., it remains one of the city's most dependable spots for late-evening carb runs.
