The wood-trimmed, brick-lined room is stripped of hype, featuring a compact bar counter and snug tables that evoke the understated warmth of a classic Tokyo neighbourhood izakaya.

Sakai Bar Menu & What to Order The kitchen sidesteps standard sushi in favour of rustic Japanese country cuisine and meticulous otsumami built to pair with drinks. Start with the golden pan-fried gyoza stuffed with pork and pickled greens, followed by the richly textured warm potato salad crowned with ikura. Heavy hitters include the juicy pork filet katsu sando and delicate fish specials like cured mackerel sunomono in heirloom tomato dashi. Stuart and the team curate an exceptional rotating lineup of rare junmai sakes, crisp highballs, and small-producer bottles you will not encounter elsewhere in the city.

Know Before You Go Sakai Bar operates strictly on a walk-in policy, with no advance reservations, so plan to arrive right around opening at 6:00 p.m. or later in the evening to skip peak waits. The space is open Thursday through Monday evenings and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The 505 Dundas streetcar drops off steps away near Sheridan Avenue, which beats hunting for scarce street parking along Dundas West.
