What is R & D Restaurant? Located at 241 Spadina Avenue in Toronto's historic Chinatown (bordering Kensington Market), R&D Restaurant—standing for "Rebel & Demon"—is a vibrant culinary venture co-founded by MasterChef Canada winner Eric Chong and Michelin three-star Chef Alvin Leung (famed internationally as "The Demon Chef"). The sleek, dramatic dining room blends street-art murals, neon accents, and open-kitchen theatrics. It has earned widespread acclaim for playfully reimagining classic Chinese and Southeast Asian flavors through modern Canadian culinary techniques.
R & D Restaurant Menu & What to Order The sharing-plate menu is packed with inventive dishes that challenge culinary conventions. A mandatory order is Eric's CSB (Crispy Char Siu Bao)—a crisp, sweet pineapple-bun pastry crust filled with savory Cantonese barbecued pork. The multi-course Peking Duck is equally legendary, presenting crisp-skinned duck carved tableside with warm steamed bao, cucumber ribbons, and rich foie gras hoisin sauce. Other highlights include wok-tossed Kung Pao chicken wontons, Kare Kare braised beef short rib in aromatic peanut-annatto reduction, and Hong Kong bubble egg waffles topped with silky milk tea ice cream.
Know Before You Go R&D welcomes guests for dinner service Wednesday through Sunday, closing on Monday and Tuesday. Advance reservations through OpenTable are strongly encouraged, especially for Friday and Saturday seatings. The restaurant sits right along Spadina Avenue between Dundas and Queen, served directly by the 510 Spadina streetcar.
