Monasaba

Monasaba has successfully brought the complex, aromatic world of Yemeni cuisine to the Scarborough food scene, moving well beyond the typical takeout experience. Founded by Mohamed Al-Showaiter and Wajdi Ohag, the restaurant has evolved from its humble, small-scale beginnings into a polished operation that prioritizes consistency and traditional flavors. The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, making it a great spot for a casual family meal or a quick, satisfying lunch. The kitchen is known for its mastery of mandi—a traditional dish of slow-roasted meat served over fragrant, buttery basmati rice—which they have refined into a modern, high-quality process that keeps locals coming back regularly.
For a first-timer, the lamb or chicken mandi is non-negotiable; the meat is consistently tender and falls right off the bone, perfectly complemented by the rice, which is often topped with fried onions, almonds, and raisins. Do not skip the sides, specifically the sahaweq, a vibrant, spicy condiment of tomatoes, cilantro, and green chilis that cuts through the richness of the meat. The menu also features excellent qolabat, such as the diced beef or lamb liver, which are best enjoyed with their fresh, tandoori-baked bread. Prices are very reasonable for the generous portion sizes provided. It is a popular spot, so while it is generally accessible, it is worth checking their hours before heading over, as they are a go-to for many in the neighbourhood.
