What is Heavenly Perogy? Operating directly out of the basement fellowship hall at St. Volodymyr's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral on Bathurst Street, Heavenly Perogy is a beloved grassroots comfort-food operation. Founded by congregant and chef Tanya Matkivska, the space pairs cafeteria-style church hall seating—complete with red tablecloths, silk flowers, and fluorescent fixtures—with an industrious open kitchen. There is no sleek cocktail bar or sidewalk patio; you descend the basement steps into a community kitchen turning out genuine, home-style Ukrainian fare.
Heavenly Perogy Menu & What to Order Hand-pinched varenyky are the undeniable centerpiece, served tender and topped with slow-cooked caramelized onions, scallions, sour cream, and crispy bacon. Order a combo plate pairing potato-and-cheddar or earthy sauerkraut-and-mushroom pierogies with a massive golden chicken schnitzel or smoked Ukrainian sausage. Round out your feast with ruby-red vegetarian beet borscht accompanied by garlic bread, or sweet blueberry dessert pierogies dusted in sugar.
Know Before You Go Tables are strictly first-come, first-served walk-in seating, though a steady stream of neighborhood takeout orders keeps the kitchen moving fast. To find the entrance, enter via the church's parking lot off Bathurst and head down the stairwell marked by the Ukrainian flag. The kitchen is easily reached via the 511 Bathurst streetcar and operates Monday through Saturday, remaining closed on Sundays.
