Garden Gate Restaurant

What is Garden Gate Restaurant? Anchoring the corner of Queen Street East and Beech Avenue since 1952, Garden Gate Restaurant is universally known to locals simply as 'The Goof'—a beloved moniker born when the neon 'GOOD FOOD' sign famously burned out into 'GOO F'. Inside, the room balances clean wooden banquettes and sleek booths with unmistakable vintage diner soul, accompanied by a breezy side patio ideal for watching the neighbourhood drift past.

Garden Gate Restaurant Menu & What to Order The kitchen specializes in unapologetic, old-school Canadian-Chinese comforts alongside reliable diner fare. Patrons consistently gravitate toward the crispy Cantonese chow mein loaded with chicken, barbecued pork, and shrimp, alongside tangy General Tao chicken and nostalgic sweet and sour chicken balls. Round out the spread with a bowl of peppery hot and sour soup, vegetarian spring rolls, or the house fried rice.

Know Before You Go The Goof operates strictly on a walk-in basis, but table turnover is remarkably swift even during peak summer beach weekends. Street parking lines Queen Street East and adjacent residential side streets, though hopping on the 501 Queen streetcar drops you steps from the front door. Takeout and delivery run through the dinner rush, making it an easy choice to pack up for a sunset meal down on the Balmy Beach boardwalk.
