Big Mao

What is Big Mao? Anchoring the bustling stretch of Yonge Street in the Yonge-Doris corridor, Big Mao specializes in authentic Chengdu maocai—essentially Sichuan hot pot thoughtfully pre-cooked and scaled for solo diners. The dining room is clean, streamlined, and utilitarian, driven by a brisk fast-casual counter pace that accommodates quick in-and-out meals alongside high-volume takeout and delivery orders.

Big Mao Menu & What to Order The core appeal lies in the single-pot stews submerged in intensely aromatic, chili-and-tallow-rich broths that deliver a genuine Sichuan numbing kick. The Fresh Pork Belly Single Pot and Beef Tripe Slice Single Pot shine brightest, soaking up the mala broth alongside vegetables and glass noodles, while the Signature Roasted Duck Single Pot provides a rich, savory divergence. Balance the simmer with street snacks like the cumin-spiced Fried Chicken Gristle Skewers and Szechwan Spicy Potato Chunks, washing it all down with a sweet Jasmine Green Milk Tea.

Know Before You Go There are no reservations here; the operation runs strictly on walk-in counter ordering, with fast table turnover even during peak evening rushes. The shop is easily accessible via the subway line between North York Centre and Finch stations, which spares you the hassle of competitive street parking along Yonge. Doors stay closed on Mondays, with regular service running Tuesday through Sunday until 10:30 p.m.
