VT Insider Tip

Grounds passes for the early qualifying and first-round days are cheap and let you wander between multiple courts to catch rising players up close — the atmosphere gets far more expensive and stadium-bound once the tournament reaches the quarterfinals.

About

The Canadian Open dates back to 1881, making it one of tennis's oldest tournaments, and under its current National Bank Open branding it alternates the men's and women's draws between Toronto and Montreal each year. In 2026 Toronto hosts the WTA 1000 women's event, with the ATP men's draw in Montreal — the reverse of 2025, when Toronto had the men. It's a legitimate stop on the pro tour, not an exhibition, with top-ten players using it as their final tune-up before New York.

What to Expect

Expect a proper professional tennis crowd: knowledgeable, mostly adult, dressed for a long day outdoors in August heat. Practice courts are open to the public on early days and are the best way to see top players without a ticket to Centre Court.

Pro Tips

Sobeys Stadium sells out for marquee night sessions with top-ranked players, so buy those ahead. Bring sun protection — most seating outside the main stadium bowl has little shade, and August afternoons in Toronto get hot.

Getting There

Sobeys Stadium is on the York University campus at Shoreham Drive. Take Line 1 (Yonge-University) to York University Station; it's a short walk or shuttle to the venue.
