VT Insider Tip

Programming is a mix of free, pay-what-you-wish, and ticketed events — check the Harbourfront Centre schedule ahead of time and book the ticketed marquee performances early, since those sell out faster than the free drop-in programming.

About

Kuumba (Swahili for "creativity") has been Harbourfront Centre's flagship Black History Month showcase since 1995, when Sandra Whiting launched it the same year the federal government formally recognized February as Black History Month. A full month of music, dance, theatre, literature, comedy, and family programming spreads across the waterfront campus, celebrating Black creativity and community rather than just marking the calendar.

What to Expect

A rotating lineup across the Harbourfront Centre's indoor theatres and studios: live music showcases, film screenings, spoken word, dance performances, and weekend family activities. Because it runs the entire month, no single day captures the whole festival — regulars pick a handful of events rather than trying to see everything.

Pro Tips

Family Sundays are your best bet if you're bringing kids — free hands-on art activities with no ticket required. Dress warm for the walk between buildings along the waterfront even though most of the action is indoors.

Getting There

Take the 509 Harbourfront or 510 Spadina streetcar to Queens Quay, or walk down from Union Station (about 10-15 minutes). Union subway station connects to both.
