VT Insider Tip

The Doc Soup series (monthly screenings throughout the year) is a great way to sample the Hot Docs vibe before committing to festival passes. During the fest itself, weekday afternoon screenings are the easiest to get into.

About

Hot Docs is the real deal for documentary lovers. Over 200 films from around the world screen across two weeks in April/May, with filmmakers in attendance for Q&As. It's one of those festivals that makes you proud Toronto is a film city beyond just TIFF.

What to Expect

Two weeks of documentary screenings at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, TIFF Lightbox, and other venues. Mix of free and ticketed events. Filmmaker Q&As after most screenings.

Pro Tips

Buy a multi-pack of tickets rather than singles — it's cheaper per film and lets you be spontaneous. The Opening Night Gala is worth the splurge for the atmosphere alone.

Getting There

Main venue is Hot Docs Cinema at Bloor and Bathurst (Bathurst subway). TIFF Lightbox at King and John is the secondary hub. Both are TTC-accessible.
