VT Insider Tip

The lion dance processions move between individual Chinatown storefronts for good-luck blessings — following the troupe down Spadina is more interesting than staying planted at the main stage.

About

Organized by the Chinatown Business Improvement Area, this free weekend celebration is smaller and scrappier than the big civic festivals downtown, but it's the most authentic Lunar New Year event the city has — centred on the businesses and community that actually make up Chinatown. Expect lion dance troupes, kung fu schools, and a genuine mix of traditional and pop-culture programming spread across Chinatown Centre and Dragon City Mall.

What to Expect

Expect a dense, street-level crowd along Spadina Avenue, lion and dragon dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, and cultural craft booths tucked into the malls at Chinatown Centre and Dragon City.

Pro Tips

This coincides with Chinatown's regular restaurant crowds, so expect long waits at popular spots during the celebration. Dress warm; late February in an open-air Chinatown street setting is still winter.

Getting There

Take the 510 Spadina or 505 Dundas streetcar directly to Spadina Avenue; the celebration is centred around Chinatown Centre (222 Spadina Ave.) and Dragon City Mall (280 Spadina Ave.), both an easy walk from St. Patrick or Osgoode subway stations.
