Longtime Canadian festivalgoers will remember the legendary green converted school bus that carried Wassabi Collective across the continent for over a decade. After a lengthy hiatus following their peak era—which included headlining stages across North America and performing at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games—the West Coast ensemble is back on the road, bringing their genre-blurring cocktail of funk, roots reggae, and progressive world rhythms to the intimate confines of BSMT254.

Fronted by vocalist and percussionist Melissa Meretsky alongside singer-guitarist Brent "Gisto" Hongisto, Wassabi Collective built their reputation on relentless positive groove and conscious lyricism. Their live sets feel less like standard club gigs and more like communal celebrations, moving seamlessly between deep dub grooves, soulful vocal hooks, and ecstatic polyrhythmic dance breaks.

The Room & The Vibe

BSMT254, located on Lansdowne Avenue just south of Bloor in the Bloordale neighbourhood, is tailor-made for this brand of rhythm-forward music. Known for its custom high-fidelity sound system and warm community atmosphere, the basement venue delivers heavy low-end without sacrificing vocal clarity. DJ Rollin' Cash will be handling selector duties before and between sets, spinning an eclectic crate of funk, global bass, and vintage grooves to keep the floor moving.

Getting There & Practical Details

BSMT254 is a two-minute walk from Lansdowne Subway Station on Line 2. The surrounding stretch of Bloor West offers plenty of casual pre-show dining and drink options, from craft beer joints to local Ethiopian eateries. Doors open late, and the dance party will run well into the early morning hours, so wear comfortable shoes and come ready to sweat.
