Behind every thriving independent artist is usually a manager doing the unglamorous, high-friction work of building a sustainable career: handling contract logistics, chasing down funding grants, diffusing interpersonal crises, and acting as an emotional shock absorber in an increasingly precarious industry. This evening panel at Queen West's It's Ok* Studios takes an honest look at the unseen labour of music management in Canada and confronts what happens when the very people tasked with caring for artists find themselves burning out.

The conversation gathers experienced Canadian managers, self-managed artists, and cultural advocates to examine how the demands placed on indie management have intensified in the streaming era. Rather than offering superficial hustle-culture advice, the discussion explores structural realities: how to navigate Canadian music grant ecosystems, protect mental health boundaries, and establish collaborative frameworks where artistic integrity and financial viability can coexist.

The Space: It's Ok* Studios

Hosted at It's Ok* Studios (468 Queen Street West), an interdisciplinary Black-led cultural hub and community arts venue, the evening provides an inclusive, low-barrier setting for genuine industry dialogue. The room encourages audience participation, making it equally valuable for emerging artist managers, DIY musicians considering bringing on representation, and broader cultural workers curious about the mechanics of the local scene.
