Tanya Marcuse: Portent

Drawing inspiration from the 16th-century illuminated manuscript *Augsburger Wunderzeichenbuch*—which catalogued natural disasters, celestial spectacles, and cosmic omens—photographer and video artist Tanya Marcuse presents *Portent* at The Image Centre this fall.

Running from September 9 to December 5, 2026, this multichannel video installation captures ominous, quiet fragments of the natural world: trees swaying under duress, volcanic steam rising, and icy branches shivering beneath flickering light. The fixed frames evoke a palpable tension between stillness and impending catastrophe. Created against the backdrop of contemporary ecological upheaval, political instability, and pandemic-era disorientation, *Portent* channels an aching awareness of our entanglement with a rapidly transforming planet, framing nature's fragile systems as both wondrous and deeply uncertain.

Hosted at The Image Centre (33 Gould Street), admission to the exhibition is entirely free. It offers a haunting, contemplative visual experience for anyone interested in contemporary lens-based art and environmental storytelling.
