A Waterfront Institution

There is a specific kind of magic that happens at the Sunnyside Pavilion. Perched on the edge of Lake Ontario in Sir Casimir Gzowski Park, this isn’t just another concert venue; it’s a piece of Toronto history. Since the 1920s, this site has served as the city’s playground, evolving from a glamorous swimming pavilion to a premier open-air dance destination. When you stand on that floor, you’re dancing on the same ground where generations of Torontonians have spent their summers. The 2026 season has leaned into this legacy, and the upcoming Toolroom Records takeover feels like the perfect marriage of heritage and high-energy modern house.

The Sound of Toolroom

If you follow house music, the name Mark Knight needs no introduction. As the head of Toolroom Records, Knight has been a pivotal figure in shaping the global house sound for over two decades. His sets are masterclasses in rhythm—expect a seamless blend of soulful vocal house, driving tech-house, and that signature Toolroom groove that feels tailor-made for an outdoor setting.

He’s joined by a powerhouse lineup that highlights both international prestige and local legends. Tony Romera brings his unique, high-octane French house flair, while the inclusion of Hatiras and Addy is a massive nod to Toronto’s deep-rooted house music culture. Hatiras, in particular, is a Canadian dance music icon whose influence stretches back to the golden era of the Toronto rave scene. Seeing these artists on the same bill at a venue as intimate as Sunnyside is a rare treat; you’re close enough to the booth to see the sweat and the focus, a far cry from the disconnected experience of a massive stadium show.

The Sunnyside Experience

What sets the Sunnyside Sessions apart isn't just the talent—it’s the atmosphere. There is something inherently liberating about dancing under the open sky while the Toronto skyline glitters in the distance. The event runs from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, which is the golden window for this venue. You get the transition from the bright, breezy afternoon to the moody, neon-lit twilight.

Beyond the music, the organizers have worked hard to cultivate a space that feels safe and inclusive. In a city where nightlife can sometimes feel impersonal or overly commercial, the Sunnyside team emphasizes a community-first approach. They are vocal about their zero-tolerance policy for harassment and their commitment to creating a respectful environment. It’s a place where you can lose yourself in the music without the usual anxieties of a crowded club.

Getting There and Making a Day of It

Sunnyside Pavilion is located in the west end, tucked away in the beautiful waterfront parklands. Because parking can be limited and the area gets quite busy on summer weekends, I highly recommend taking the TTC or cycling. The Martin Goodman Trail runs right past the venue, making it an incredibly scenic ride if you’re coming from the downtown core or Liberty Village.

Before you head to the pavilion, spend some time exploring the surrounding neighbourhood. Roncesvalles is just a short walk or bike ride north. Grab a pre-show bite at one of the many excellent spots on 'Roncy'—I’m a big fan of the patio vibes at Barque Smokehouse or a quick, delicious taco at La Cubana. If you want to keep the energy going after 11:00 PM, the bars along Roncesvalles offer a more laid-back, local contrast to the intensity of the dance floor. Just remember: this is a rain-or-shine event. If the clouds roll in, the party moves to the covered observation deck, which actually offers a pretty spectacular, moody view of the lake in the rain.
