Soul in the City

A Night at the Castle
There is something inherently magical about Casa Loma in the summer. While tourists spend their days wandering the Gothic Revival halls and secret tunnels of Sir Henry Pellatt’s former estate, the locals know that the real magic happens when the sun dips below the horizon and the Glass Pavilion opens up to the night sky. Soul in the City has cemented itself as one of Toronto’s most sophisticated summer traditions, stripping away the pretension of a formal concert and replacing it with the intimacy of a backyard party—if your backyard happened to be a historic castle overlooking the downtown skyline.
The Sound of Soul
At the helm of this operation is Sean Jones, a Juno Award-winning powerhouse who has become synonymous with the Toronto R&B scene. Jones isn’t just a performer; he’s a curator of vibes. Known for his commanding stage presence and a vocal range that can shift from a whisper to a roar in a single measure, he brings a level of polish to these shows that is rare in open-air settings.
This year’s edition promises to be particularly electric, with a lineup that highlights the depth of local talent. Bringing in Aion Clarke and Ava Marie adds a dynamic layer to the evening; expect a setlist that traverses the golden era of R&B, soul standards, and perhaps a few original tracks that showcase why Jones remains a fixture of the Canadian music landscape. The chemistry between these performers, combined with the acoustics of the pavilion, creates a soundscape that feels both expansive and deeply personal.
Making the Most of Your Evening
Because this is a dining-style, first-come-first-served event, the experience starts long before the first note is played. The doors open at 5:00 PM, and I cannot stress this enough: arrive early. The seating is unassigned, and the best spots—those with the clearest views of the stage and the best vantage point of the castle’s illuminated towers—fill up fast.
Since your ticket doesn't grant you access to the castle’s interior, treat the grounds as your sanctuary for the evening. The vibe is relaxed but elevated; it’s the perfect excuse to dress up a little, grab a glass of wine, and settle in. If you are coming with a group, coordinate your arrival times. The staff is accommodating, but they need at least half your party present to hold a table, so don't be the person trying to save four seats with a single jacket.
Getting There & Neighbourhood Tips
Located at 1 Austin Terrace, Casa Loma sits perched on the edge of the Davenport escarpment. If you’re driving, the onsite parking is limited and costs $20, which can be a headache if you arrive late. The overflow lot at George Brown College just to the south is a reliable backup, but honestly, the best way to arrive is by transit. A short, albeit steep, walk from Dupont Station gets your blood pumping before the music starts.
Since you’re already in the neighbourhood, why not make a full evening of it? The Annex is just a stone’s throw away. Before heading up the hill, grab a pre-show cocktail or a bite at one of the many spots along Bloor Street. Whether you’re looking for upscale dining or a casual patio, the area offers plenty of options to fuel up before you spend the night dancing under the stars.
