Sewing Basics

Ever wanted to pick up sewing or need a solid refresher on how to actually operate a sewing machine without tangling the bobbin? Head up to the eLearning Lab at the North York Central Library for an introductory sewing workshop designed to take the intimidation out of stitching.

Led by library staff, this hands-on session covers all the fundamentals: proper machine threading, winding bobbins, practicing basic stitches, and understanding tension. Best of all, you won't just be practicing on scrap fabric—participants will put their new skills to work by creating a small, custom-made pouch to take home.

What to Know Before You Go All materials are fully provided, so you just need to bring your enthusiasm. While kids under 13 are welcome to join, they must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and opens on August 1st at 12:30 pm sharp through the Toronto Public Library portal. Spaces tend to fill up quickly for these maker workshops, and note that unclaimed spots are released after the first five minutes, so don't be late!

Located right at North York Centre station, the library is easily accessible via TTC Line 1. Make a day of it by grabbing a coffee at one of the many cafes along Yonge Street before diving into your new creative hobby.
