Few photographers have confronted portraiture’s most persistent taboos with the unflinching clarity of Richard Avedon. Opening September 9 through December 5, 2026, across the Main Gallery and University Gallery at The Image Centre, *Richard Avedon Immortal: Portraits of Aging, 1951–2004* brings together nearly 100 remarkable photographs that chart a lesser-known, profound dimension of the master photographer’s life work.

Moving far beyond idealized celebrity portraiture from his early days at *Harper's Bazaar*, Avedon captured the physical marks of time across the faces of artists, writers, musicians, and world leaders—including Toni Morrison, Gabriel García Márquez, Duke Ellington, Patti Smith, Truman Capote, and the Dalai Lama. Notably, the exhibition also features a special restaging of Avedon’s seminal 1974 MoMA exhibition *Jacob Israel Avedon*, which chronicled his father's final years in nine deeply moving portraits.

Co-organized by The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, this free exhibition is one of the season's premier cultural events. Visit the gallery at 33 Gould Street to experience an unprecedented exploration of human resilience, mortality, and grace through a legendary lens.
