Eugene Ionesco’s *Rhinoceros* remains one of the most poignant and surreal allegories of the 20th century, and the students at Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Performance are bringing it to life for a modern audience. The play depicts a small French town where, one by one, the inhabitants transform into rhinoceroses. As the 'rhinoceritis' spreads, the protagonist, Berenger, struggles to maintain his humanity in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform.
Absurdism with a Message
Directed by Cynthia Ashperger, this production promises to lean into the play’s absurdist roots while highlighting its enduring relevance. In an era of viral trends and echo chambers, the 'herd mentality' Ionesco satirized feels more familiar than ever. The School of Performance is known for its high production values and the professional calibre of its student actors, making this a great opportunity to see the next generation of Canadian theatre talent.
Sliding Scale Accessibility
In a move toward greater accessibility, the production offers tickets on a sliding scale from $5 to $50. This allows students, arts workers, and community members to choose a price point that fits their budget, ensuring that experimental theatre remains open to everyone. All proceeds go back into supporting the creative programs at TMU.
The Venue and Neighbourhood
The performance takes place at the School of Performance building on Yonge Street. Being in the heart of downtown, you’re surrounded by options for a post-show discussion. Grab a coffee at Balzac’s in the nearby Image Centre or head over to the many eateries in the Garden District. The venue is easily accessible via the Yonge subway line, with Dundas Station just a short walk away.
