Presented by the WeeFestival and the Alliance Française de Toronto, *Petit Pois* is a delicate and imaginative theatre production designed for children aged 4 to 7. This poetic, tragicomic story uses theatre, clowning, and visual arts to explore themes of displacement and belonging in a way that is accessible and gentle for young audiences.
The Story
The play follows a little green pea who escapes from a refugee camp and is discovered by a clown-soldier in a vegetable garden. She decides to help him on a journey around the world to find his origins and his family. It is a story that addresses complex topics like uprooting and rejection through a lens of wonder and visual storytelling.
An Immersive Experience
What makes this production particularly special is its visual nature. Each scene is designed to look like a framed image, and at the end of the performance, the audience is invited to 'visit the exhibition' of the play’s scenes. It’s a beautiful, thoughtful way to introduce young children to the power of theatre and storytelling. The performance takes place at the Spadina Theatre.
