My House
A Jazz Residency Like No Other
There is something inherently special about the Junction—a neighbourhood that wears its history in its brickwork and its future in its burgeoning arts scene. This June, that character is being amplified by the 2nd Annual MY HOUSE Junction Jazz Festival. Forget the sprawling, impersonal stages of larger summer festivals; this is a residency in the truest sense of the word. For seven consecutive nights, 2882 Dundas Street West transforms into a sanctuary for sonic exploration, anchored by the relentless creative energy of Artistic Director and Artist-in-Residence, Brownman Ali.
Brownman Ali isn’t just a headliner; he is the heartbeat of this festival. A 10-time Global Music Award winner and a fixture on the JUNO circuit, Ali has built a reputation as one of Canada’s most formidable trumpet players. His involvement here is a massive coup for the neighbourhood. By hand-picking every act on the bill, Ali has curated a narrative arc that spans the jazz spectrum, from the technical wizardry of live-looping vocalists to the high-octane pulse of electric-jazz fusion. The fact that he performs every single night—culminating in a Sunday matinée dedicated to the Prestige-era works of Miles Davis—guarantees that the quality control remains razor-sharp from start to finish.
The Lineup: A Genre-Spanning Journey
The festival’s brilliance lies in its refusal to be pigeonholed. Monday night kicks off with the innovative Jordana Talsky, whose mastery of live looping turns the human voice into a full-bodied jazz ensemble. By mid-week, the mood shifts toward the cerebral, with the Nick MacLean 4-Tet tackling the complex, lush arrangements of Herbie Hancock—a performance that demands the kind of attentive, quiet listening that the MY HOUSE venue naturally encourages.
For those who prefer their jazz with a bit more heat, Thursday’s set with Arecibo—Proyecto Blanquito brings the rhythmic complexity of Latin-Jazz to the Junction. The weekend then shifts into high gear with the Brownman Electryc Trio on Friday, followed by Genevieve Marentette’s Flux-State on Saturday, which promises a driving, electric-vocal fusion that will likely be the most energetic night of the week. It is a tight, curated program where every act feels intentional.
The Venue: An Intimate Living Room
MY HOUSE is not your typical concert hall. It is an antique-furnished lounge that feels less like a venue and more like a well-curated, private living room. Its reputation as a top-tier event space in Toronto is well-earned; the acoustics are warm, the atmosphere is cozy, and the sightlines are perfect. Because of this intimacy, the barrier between the performer and the audience is virtually non-existent. You aren't just watching a show; you are witnessing the creative process in real-time. It is the kind of space where you can hear the breath of the trumpet player and the subtle scrape of a guitar pick, making it the ideal home for a festival that prioritizes musicianship over spectacle.
Getting There and Making a Night of It
The Junction is one of Toronto’s most walkable and charming neighbourhoods, making it an easy destination for a night out. If you are taking the TTC, the 40 Junction bus or the 504 streetcar will get you within striking distance of Dundas and Keele.
Before the music starts, take a stroll down Dundas Street West. The area is packed with excellent pre-show options. Grab a craft beer at Indie Alehouse just a few doors down, or if you’re looking for something more substantial, the neighbourhood is home to some of the city’s best hidden-gem restaurants. Given the intimate capacity of MY HOUSE, however, the most important piece of advice is to book your tickets and reservations well in advance. This is a seven-night run with zero filler, and once word gets out, those seats will disappear quickly.
