Dive deep into Indigenous craftsmanship with this comprehensive four-part workshop at the Bata Shoe Museum. Led by Anishinaabe artist Natalie Ortiz, this program offers a rare, hands-on opportunity to learn the traditional art of moccasin-making from start to finish.

What You'll Learn This isn't just a quick craft session; it's a full immersion into hand-sewing leatherwork and beading techniques. Natalie will guide participants through every step of the process, including design, pattern-making, intricate beadwork, and final construction. You'll also learn essential tips for caring for your finished footwear, ensuring your custom-made moccasins last for years to come.

Why It Matters This workshop is part of the Manitobah Storyboot School, which aims to preserve and share traditional Indigenous skills. It’s a fantastic way to connect with Anishinaabe culture and gain a newfound appreciation for the artistry involved in traditional footwear. The museum is also generously offering 10 free spots for Indigenous youth on a first-come, first-served basis, making this an inclusive and community-focused event.

Practical Info The workshop takes place over four Saturdays: May 16, 23, 30, and June 6, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. All tools and materials are provided. Because this is a multi-session course, participants are expected to attend all dates to ensure the project is completed. If you're interested in one of the youth spots, be sure to check the museum's website for the application form. The Bata Shoe Museum is located at 327 Bloor St W, conveniently near St. George station.
