The By the Lake Book Club continues its tradition of bringing Canada’s finest literary voices to Etobicoke’s waterfront. This April, the spotlight is on Martha Bátiz and her debut novel, *A Daughter’s Place*. Set during the Spanish Golden Age, the book is a sweeping historical narrative that imagines the life of Isabel, the real-life daughter of Miguel de Cervantes, as she navigates a world of secrecy and survival while her father writes *Don Quixote*.

A Voice for the Voiceless Martha Bátiz is a Mexican-Canadian writer known for her powerful storytelling and her focus on the lives of women in history. In *A Daughter’s Place*, she gives a voice to those who lived in the shadows of famous men. The event will feature Bátiz reading from the novel, followed by an in-depth discussion about her research and the process of blending historical fact with fiction. It’s a must for fans of historical drama and feminist literature.

The Assembly Hall Experience Located in a beautiful historic building in Colonel Samuel Smith Park, the Assembly Hall provides a serene and inspiring setting for literary events. The book club is a community staple, known for its welcoming atmosphere and engaging Q&A sessions. It’s a great way to meet fellow book lovers and support local culture in the New Toronto neighbourhood.

Accessibility and Community The By the Lake Book Club is committed to accessibility, offering ASL interpretation for in-person attendees and live subtitles for those joining virtually. Whether you’ve already read the book or are just looking for your next great read, this evening with Martha Bátiz promises to be a highlight of the spring literary calendar. Be sure to stick around for the book signing after the talk!
