Step back in time and explore the human stories behind major historical moments at the Lillian H. Smith Library's monthly Historical Fiction Book Club. This August, the group gathers in the basement program room to discuss Colson Whitehead's devastatingly powerful novel, *The Nickel Boys*. Based on the harrowing true history of the Dozier School for Boys in Florida, Whitehead’s masterwork explores institutional abuse and systemic racism through the eyes of two young Black teenagers in the Jim Crow-era American South.
Running from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the session is free to attend and open to anyone with a passion for historical narratives. Copies are available at the branch, though participants are encouraged to pick theirs up in advance.
Located on College Street right on the edge of Chinatown and the University of Toronto campus, it's an ideal excuse to grab a late bubble tea or a cheap bite nearby before or after the discussion.
