Marking the historic abolition of slavery across the British Empire, the annual Emancipation Underground Freedom Train Ride offers a deeply moving and unique community experience across Toronto. Presented by the Blackhurst Cultural Centre in partnership with the TTC, participants gather late-night to journey together from Vaughan Metropolitan Centre down to Union Station.
Inspired by the legacy of the Underground Railroad, the ride welcomes August 1st through live music, poetry, shared reflections, and collective community celebration. This free, all-ages event transforms public transit into a moving space of remembrance and resilience. It is an inspiring way to kick off Emancipation Month and honour those who fought for freedom.
