Elvis may have left the building decades ago, but his presence is felt more strongly than ever at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema this March. *EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert* is a unique cinematic experience curated by Oscar-nominated director Baz Luhrmann. While researching his 2022 biopic, Luhrmann unearthed a treasure trove of long-lost footage that provides a raw, intimate look at the man behind the myth.
Rare Archives Uncovered
This isn't just another concert film. The screening features rare 16mm footage of Elvis on tour, precious 8mm clips from the Graceland archives, and perhaps most interestingly, recordings of Elvis telling his own story in his own words. It focuses heavily on his legendary Las Vegas residency in the 1970s—a period of immense creativity and personal struggle that defined his later years. Luhrmann’s signature style ensures the presentation is as dazzling as the subject matter.
A Historic Annex Venue
Watching this at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema adds a layer of Toronto history to the night. The theatre has been a fixture of the Annex since 1913 and remains one of the best places in the city to see documentary and archival film. The acoustics are excellent, which is vital for a film that leans so heavily on the power of Presley's voice.
Make a Night of It
The Bloor and Bathurst area is perfect for a post-film discussion. You can head over to Paupers Pub for a drink on the rooftop or grab a late-night bite at one of the many ramen spots lining Bloor Street. For fans of music history and documentary filmmaking, this is a rare opportunity to see 'The King' in a whole new light.
