Gwartzman’s Art Supplies has been a fixture of the Toronto art scene since the 1940s, and their monthly costumed life drawing sessions are the perfect way to tap into that history. Located on Spadina near College, this isn't your typical stiff academic drawing class. It’s an informal, creative gathering designed for artists of all levels to practice their craft in a relaxed environment.
What to Expect
Each month features a different model and a unique costume theme, providing fresh challenges for capturing fabric, texture, and character. The session kicks off with quick gesture poses to get your hand moving, progressively building toward longer 20-minute poses that allow for more detailed rendering. There’s a break halfway through to stretch your legs and perhaps peek at what your neighbours are sketching.
Materials and Setup
While the vibe is casual, the setup is professional. Gwartzman’s provides limited drawing boards, clips, and table easels on a first-come, first-served basis. You’re encouraged to bring your own dry media—think charcoal, conté, or a classic newsprint pad. If you run out of supplies or want to try a new grade of graphite, the shop staff are experts and can help you find exactly what you need before the session starts.
Getting There and Nearby
The shop is easily accessible via the 510 Spadina or 506 College streetcars. If you're looking for a post-drawing drink or snack, you're steps away from the best of Kensington Market and Chinatown. Grab a cocktail at nearby 416 Snack Bar or a late-night bite at one of the many dumpling houses along Spadina to discuss your sketches with fellow participants.
